OmniRouter: identify the project before installing

OmniRouter names several unrelated projects. Match the repository owner, app type, endpoint, and install command before comparing a result with 9Router or OmniRoute.

OmniRouter is an ambiguous name, not a reliable identifier for one product. Search results include an Electron chat application, a macOS desktop application, and other routing projects. OmniRoute, the gateway linked from 9Router’s README, has a different repository name. Match the owner and repository before following an installation command.

Match your search result to its source

RepositoryDescribed purposeWhat distinguishes it
cheaper-inference/OmniRouteGateway for model providers and coding clientsThe OmniRoute project linked by 9Router
mamoonk/omnirouterElectron chat application with multiple providersA desktop application rather than the same gateway distribution
sottey/omniroutermacOS-first prompt and API desktop applicationUses a Go/Wails application workflow
OmniDimen/OmniRouterModel routing gatewayA different owner and repository to evaluate on its own

These are source identities, not recommendations or claims of equivalent security, maintenance, or compatibility. The table prevents a common mistake: copying a command intended for one project while reading another project’s feature list.

Follow the link from the 9Router repository to the exact OmniRoute repository. Then read our OmniRoute comparison. Verify the package and container links from that project’s README rather than guessing an npm name from the search term.

Some discussions use “OmniRouter” informally when discussing OmniRoute. That wording is not proof that every similarly named repository is a fork of 9Router. A direct source link resolves the ambiguity more reliably than a title, logo, or search snippet.

If you meant a desktop application

Read its prerequisites and build instructions as a separate product. An Electron application’s npm run dev and a Go/Wails application’s build command do not install the OmniRoute gateway. Likewise, a desktop app that can call model APIs does not necessarily expose the local API endpoint expected by Claude Code or Codex.

Determine the result you want: chatting in the app, sending a prompt to another app, or providing an API for an external coding client. Only the last task requires a gateway endpoint. Check the actual documentation for that capability instead of assuming it from “router” in the name.

Verify before adding credentials

Confirm the repository owner, linked website, supported platform, license, and documented secret-storage mechanism. Read the installation command before running it. If a command downloads a remote script, inspect its source and intended project; do not treat a familiar product name as authorization to run unrelated code.

Use credentials you can revoke and scope appropriately. Avoid importing a whole existing router configuration into another application without checking its format and contents. Configuration exports can include provider secrets and account identifiers.

Compare with 9Router only after identity is clear

For a gateway comparison, use the same client and model task, then check endpoint compatibility, tools, streaming, provider access, and data persistence. For a desktop app, compare the interactive workflow instead. A desktop application’s convenience cannot establish compatibility with a server API it never claims to provide.

If a tutorial only says “install OmniRouter” without an owner or official link, ask for that missing identity before acting. You can still prepare a small test task and back up your current settings, but a guessed package name is a poor foundation for a migration.

This page intentionally stays focused on identifying the right project. Configuration details belong to the selected project’s own documentation and the corresponding OmniRoute guide, where that is the product you intended.
