FreeLLMAPI vs 9Router: free tiers and routing
Compare FreeLLMAPI with 9Router, inspect the upstream project, and evaluate provider keys, quota limits, model discovery, routing, and migration requirements.
FreeLLMAPI is a gateway project that combines configured provider access behind an API. It is separate from 9Router. Its name does not mean every model request is unlimited, and a total advertised across many providers is not a quota automatically granted to one user.
This guide refers to tashfeenahmed/freellmapi, the repository linked by the project’s documentation. Check that identity before installing a similarly named fork or package.
What does “free” cover?
Separate the gateway software, a provider’s free allowance, and any optional catalog or hosted service. They can have different terms. The upstream project describes aggregation of provider free tiers; you still need access to the relevant providers and must stay within each account’s current conditions.
Do not treat a catalog’s theoretical monthly total as a promise that your account can consume that amount. Eligibility, supported regions, request limits, model availability, and account verification can reduce what is usable. Check the specific provider before depending on it for a long agent run.
Compare the API your client needs
The FreeLLMAPI API reference documents a local OpenAI-compatible base at http://localhost:3001/v1 and a unified key from its dashboard. 9Router’s usual local OpenAI-compatible base is http://localhost:20128/v1. Those are separate services with separate credentials and model catalogs.
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Chat versus Responses or Messages | Similar SDKs can still use different endpoints |
| Model IDs | A name or routing alias in one gateway may not exist in another |
| Tool calling | Agents need valid calls and tool-result handling |
| Streaming | A buffered response does not verify streaming behavior |
| Authentication | A unified gateway key differs from each upstream provider key |
| Quota reporting | Aggregate estimates can hide the exhausted provider |
Use a concrete task and inspect the request at the gateway. Do not select a replacement only because it lists more models.
Evaluate in a separate instance
Follow the current installation instructions, use a separate data directory, and confirm the port before starting. Keep your working 9Router instance unchanged while testing.
Add one provider you are authorized to use. Discover its available models, select an explicit model, and run a short text request. Only after that works should you evaluate the project’s automatic routing options. A successful request through one provider does not establish that every configured fallback is healthy.
Keep backups of your current client settings. Moving from one gateway to another generally requires changing the base URL, key, and model selection together. A partial migration can produce an authentication failure that looks like a model problem.
Avoid chaining routers without a reason
It may be technically possible to put a compatible gateway behind another, but that adds another authentication boundary, model mapping, timeout, and fallback policy. Two layers of automatic routing can make it difficult to identify who answered or why a request retried.
Prefer testing each gateway directly against the client first. If chaining solves a specific requirement, document which layer owns retries and fallback, disable unnecessary overlapping behavior, and verify the actual provider on a small request. Do not assume the chain preserves every optional field.
What happens when a free tier is exhausted?
A router can choose another configured, eligible route if its rules allow that. It cannot replenish the exhausted account. A backup may have different capabilities or incur charges, so inspect its terms before including it in a combo.
For dependable operation, keep an explicit failure state and a known alternative rather than promising uninterrupted free usage. Compare FreeLLMAPI and 9Router on the routes that work for your accounts, the visibility of their errors, and the maintenance you are prepared to perform. The alternatives overview helps place hosted OpenRouter and other local gateways in the same decision.
